It would be insane if they did advertise on television or magazines.

San Andreas had 15 million pre-orders alone. But even that game didn't have billions.

Just take half of the players from WoW, DAOC, Everquest, City of Heroes, FF XI Online, misc MMORPGs and add them up.
~10.000.000

Quote:
Now divide that number by, oh say 100,
~100.000

Quote:
then do a cube root of that number.
~50

Quote:
Lastly subtract 50 from that number you have right now
~0

and you should come of with the answer

That's around the right number. Seeing as how none of us count as subscribers.

yes it would be nice to know how many people are currently logged in when you play, but then isn't that the kind egotistical mould of orpg that gw is trying to break?

I didnt know the numbers I just used the info that was given in this thread.

That still does nothing to disprove my point, Lineage has had time to let its fan base grow.

So what where you trying to prove by above statement?

actually u got it all upside down. its the kiddies that dont care about p2p as they have parents that carry the credit card and GW will gather all those adults that have work and dont have that much time on theyre hands.

Adults may have more money, but they also usually have a much better understanding of the value of money. Teenagers are more likely to spend $15/mo on a game, I would think. People making a house payment, a car payment, insurance, bills, savings/retirement plan, school expenses for the kids, food, etc., tend to be less frivolous.

When you have the money to spare, it's still a lot easier to justify spending it on something once than taking on yet another monthly bill.

i honestly havent seen one advertisement for thegame in all the pc mag's or vid game mags that i subscribe to, the only reason i found out about this game was from word of mouth and a crazed gamestop employee who wouldnt shut up about it...now i can see why
I learned about this game through PC Gamer Magazine. Then every magazine I bought for months, I would see articles and pictures of the game.

I learned of this game while playing Diablo 2 (and being so damn borred its not even funny). We will being seeing much more coverege in the gaming mags come release, simply because the game will be much to big to ignore.

A lot of people don't suscribe to magazines. I do occasionally pick up a few, But not very often. I'm not a die-hard gamer.. I still like to do a bunch of things, and ordering a magazine doesn't do much for me. I'm thinking maybe a commercial or something more broad like that, that a lot of people tend to see. The E3E event was a good start, But that was a while ago. People may have lost interest or so. I'm just saying it hasn't been advertised as well as other games has. It will still have a goodly sized playerbase to start, But not nearly as much as WoW or EQ have already. I'm saying things like this need time to grow. Personally, I never even heard about GW till 2 weeks ago, When I was at a local GameCrazy and my brother pointed it out to me in it's preorder box and said, "That game is supposed to be bad !!" (Bad meaning good, Slang)

one of the main reasons i chose guild wars over wow is because i, an adult, dont want to pay monthly fees :P after all, not only does that take away food/bill/rent money, but it also makes me feel i have to keep playing because 'oh i already paid for this month, and if i don't pay for it i'll lose my account' whereas if i wanna give up on gw for a couple months i dont have to worry i'll have them wiped if i dont keep up the payments.

if i was a kid i'd probably be badgering my parents to pay for WoW lol.

I'd guess that guild wars won't start out as big as WoW or everquest, but give it a few years and more and more people will join (attracted by no fees) plus because the chapters will be like everquest 2: i.e. they'll attract new people because they're additions to an already known game; one of the things that would attract people to everquest 2 is the fact that everquest is already an established and successful game.
